April 16, 2014, Latham N.Y. – Leonard Bus Sales was on hand recently as members of the school bus industry, state transportation officials and law enforcement gathered together to draw attention to school bus stop safety at the state’s annual Operation Safe Stop Day. The event focused on the education and enforcement campaign targeting drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses.
“Safety is foremost in our minds at Leonard Bus Sales,” said Jon Leonard, Leonard Bus Sales marketing director, who represented the New York State Bus Distributors Association at the event. “As a company and an industry, we work to promote school bus safety every day of the year. So we were delighted to participate in the annual Operation Safe Stop Day and help draw attention to school bus stop traffic laws.”
An estimated 50,000 motorists illegally pass stopped school buses each day in New York State alone. Penalties for violating the traffic laws requiring motorists to stop for school buses include up to 30-days in jail, a 400-dollar fine, and a 5 point penalty on their drivers’ license for the first offense.
This year’s Operation Safe Stop Day event was organized by the New York Association for Pupil Transportation, and took place in Latham, N.Y., on April 3. Representatives from the New York State Department of Transportation, The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, state, local and county law enforcement, school districts, and the school bus industry professionals all attended the annual gathering.
