January 24, 2017, Deposit, NY – Leonard Bus Sales extended their congratulations to New York’s recipients of the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2016 clean-diesel school bus rebate program today. The funds, which are made available through the EPA’s Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA), are used to replace older diesel school buses with newer, more efficient, clean-diesel buses or to retrofit the older buses with advanced clean-diesel technology.
“The DERA program encourages our school transportation partners to do what we know is the most cost-effective way to green-up their fleet, and that is replace older school buses with new clean-diesel buses,” said Leonard Bus Sales Vice President, Jon Leonard. “Diesel technology has improved significantly and today’s clean-diesel buses are 20 times cleaner than the buses of ten years ago. Our congratulations go out to all the winners.”
New York’s grant recipients include Brocton, Genesee Valley, Taconic Hills, and Whitesboro Central School Districts, along with Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central Schools and Long Island-based Huntington Coach. Chosen by the EPA from a pool of over 500 applicants, New York’s winners are among the total of 88 from across the country selected to share in the program’s funding.
The winners will receive rebates between $15,000 and $25,000 towards the replacement of school buses with engine model years of 2006 or older, depending on the size of the bus. They also have the option of retrofitting school buses with engine model years between 1994 and 2006, which the EPA will fully fund up to $4,000.
The deadline to submit purchase orders for new buses and retrofits is March, 2017. Payment documentation, along with proof of delivery or installation of retrofits, is due in September of this year.
